Thanks! I am so glad you're liking this! There is definitely a unique challenge for us to reach weight loss goals if we're raising kids and cooking for a family! One person I know says, "Quit eating their [the kids'] food!". So TRUE, I love to scarf down leftover chicken nuggets and mac 'n' cheese! My only advice for the making luches part is - have them make their own lunches! ;) My 6 and 7 year olds pack their own lunches the night before. I sort of supervise but try not to interfere too much. May not work for you but it works for us! Also, it is great for teaching them some responsibility! As for the spouse, well, that is a whole other issue! I suppose you could start packing really healthy for him so if you snack a little it would be on baby carrots and celery!?

Thanks so much for being here! Would love to hear more about you in the future!

Hi Jenn,
I really appreciated this post and have been thinking about it all month. I'm not big on a detox regime or anything, but I really like the idea of giving my system 12 hours of rest from digestion. I also find that the nights I work out at the gym I don't have as strong of a desire to eat at after. My big problem that started this year is that I make my daughter and husband's lunches at night when I'm cleaning up and that inspires all kinds of snacking. I haven't yet figured out a better time to make their lunches.

I love reading your blog because you bring up issues that I think about and would love to talk about with other moms striving to make healthy choices for their own bodies as they navigate the craziness of raising a family. Thanks for your insights!

Georgia! Thanks so much for visiting! I am honored that a friend and fellow runner is reading my blog. Didn't you run a marathon last year? I know you have some running tips to share. :) But seriously, I glanced back through old entries to find where I might have misled you to believe I run 9 miles every day - yikes, I'm sorry, that must have come across wrong - once a week I do a "long" run, this week it will be 11 miles (last week 10), but the other days I just run somewhere between 5 and 7, whatever I feel like (some days are weight or cross training in between). But, of course, I'm training for a half marathon so once I'm done I don't know what my running schedule will look like, 1-2 miles sounds good to me!

I am not an expert on abdominal muscles, pre or post partum, but I seem to remember that if the muscles separate (or thin out) down the middle they can still be strengthened. Take a look at this article I found, see what you think, but for sure ask your doc about it. There are so many crazy "bodily rearrangements" that happen after a baby. I do know that it is so important for women to regain core strength after delivery. I really like some of the Yoga Booty Ballet workout dvd's from BeachBody.com.

And here's a link to an article I did on core strengthening, click here.

Hi Jenn,
I have enjoyed reading your blog lately--since I discovered it. I too aspire to be a lean, strong mom and enjoy discussions on the topic. I don't know much about South Beach, but I'm curious about the soft-in-the-middle issues. Do you know anything about the abdominal muscles that separate during pregnancy? How long does it take for them to come back together--or do they ever? (or have those muscles always been that way and I just never noticed them before??) When I do crunches I can stick my fingers in between those muscles in my stomach and it feels really weird! Just curious if you knew anything about that.

BTW, I am so amazed that you run 9 miles all the time. I can run 1 or 2 and I now think of you as I finish up my 20 minutes and marvel at your strength and stamina. That's awesome!

You're welcome! Good for you. That is awesome that you're gonna do a 10k, I probably should have started with that rather than jump into the 1/2. I'm sure the 10k will be no sweat for you. I agree, registering for an actual race has motivated me to remain committed to my training, in fact, I started training FIRST, to make sure I could actually get started.
What I love about training for a race is that it has changed my perspective on fitness and weight loss. It's awesome because it takes the pressure and focus off of losing weight and onto athletic performance. When I eat crappy I pay for it during my run, if I don't get enough sleep, I pay for it during my run. My daily habits should assist me in accomplishing a 7, or 10 or 15 mile run. Now my eating, drinking and sleeping habits affect my performance for better or worse. But this is a topic for another post! :)
(By the way, last night I DID eat too many potato chips at 11pm and I DID make the mistake of staying up too late, and, guess what? I DID pay for it this morning on my 5 mile run.....NOT fun!

When I eat crappy I pay for it during my run, if I don’t get enough sleep, I pay for it during my run. My daily habits should assist me in accomplishing a 7, or 10 or 15 mile run. Now my eating, drinking and sleeping habits affect my performance for better or worse. But this is a topic for another post!
(By the way, last night I DID eat too many potato chips at 11pm and I DID make the mistake of staying up too late, and, guess what? I DID pay for it this morning on my 5 mile run…..NOT fun!

Hey Jenn. I just signed up to do a 10k in November with some girls from my church. I needed to make a commitment to get me going with exercising again.

Thanks for the Running Map and the Weatherunderground links!

[...] I just completed my first 10 mile run, in preparation for the 1/2 marathon I am running 6 weeks from today! If you’ve read my other articles you may remember that running has been the exercise that literally tips the scales for me and helps me to burn off the baby weight that I acquire during pregnancy. For you, it may be something different that helps you accomplish your postpartum weight loss goals, sometimes just changing up your exercise routine and challenging yourself will help you to finally torch those last (or the next) five pounds. But if you’re not sure what to do, I suggest giving running a try. For some great tips on getting started running, go here.
